Still reading McConaughey’s autobiography. Few notes. After all this years I still find it crazy how well off middle class was in many countries like America, when comparing to my own home country. McConaughey went for one year to live in Australia with the host family as exchange student in high school. That already blew my mind, because I couldn’t imagine having money for a plane ticket from Texas to Australia when I was 16 or something. Then he does two trips to Europe. One while being student, and another after graduation. Second time he spends whole summer riding rented bike in Europe. That again shocks me. How many people can afford taking 3 months off, paying for flights and motorbikes and things like that? And the last part about money. Before he got his first big paycheck he went with his brother to Las Vegas for Super Bowl (expensive, but I think his brother paid for it). He won 2KUSD in blackjack and then immediately put all his money as a bet on the outcome of the Super Bowl. He lost and he was left with 20USD in cash. This one also surprised me. I couldn’t connect. When I was 22 there were no way I would put 2K USD on a bet. I think even now those differences in our(as people) lives sometimes surprise me. We have different backgrounds, stories, grew up in different contexts. And that means we can act differently. Just a reminder for myself here.

  • Well, even in France, betting 2K and travelling a whole summer in Europe are not typically middle class behaviours. I guess the spectrum of the middle class is very wide and highly subjective too
