Wilco « A Ghost is Born » (20th anniversary)

Habituellement je ne suis pas vraiment intéressé par les coffrets d’inédits et raretés que sortent les artistes. Après tout, si ces morceaux ne se sont pas retrouvés sur les albums, c’est qu’il y a peut-être une raison non ? Mais il s’agit de Wilco, et je ne pouvais tout simplement pas ignorer ce colossal coffret sorti à l’occasion des 20 ans de “A Ghost is Born”. Sans trop d’attente donc, je me suis plongé dans l’écoute de ces 8 disques regroupant l’album original, des versions alternatives, des enregistrements live, mais aussi les « Fundamentals », une série d’improvisations conceptuelles en studio. L’écoute de ce coffret apporte un éclairage tout nouveau sur des morceaux que je ne m’imaginais pas redécouvrir. Les versions alternatives, pour la plupart, ne sont pas des « sous-versions », mais des visions souvent complètement différentes et parfois surprenantes. Certaines d’entre elles auraient pu selon moi se retrouver sur l’album sans rougir, et je me suis même surpris à préférer certaines de ces versions à celles qui ont fini sur l’album. « Handshake Drugs » pour n’en citer qu’une. Il y a aussi des morceaux qui resteront sur la touche, comme « Kicking Television », qui donnera son titre au live sorti un an plus tard, ou « Improbable Germany », esquisse de ce qui deviendra « Impossible Germany », un des morceaux piliers de l’album « Sky Blue Sky ». Les « Fundamentals », quand à eux, nous plongent dans l’intimité créative d’un groupe au sommet de son art et en constante évolution. Un peu comme si on avait poussé la porte du studio pour assister à une de leurs répétitions… On fait sans difficulté le lien entre ces sessions et l’esprit qui s’est retrouvé sur l’album. En tant que musicien actuellement en phase de composition, c’est très intéressant et véritablement inspirant. Très bonne surprise, je recommande.

I usually don’t take these kind of shots as I’m more a nature/outdoor kind of guy, but in Paris now for work, I had my camera in my bag and my youngest daughter wanted an Eiffel Tower picture. I don’t regret upgrading to the x-t4 a few years back, being able to get this result with the camera handheld is really a game changer. No way I could have done that with my x-t1 without a tripod. In fact, I wouldn’t even have tried ! #photography

However, over time, I’ve learned to be wary of these ultra-trendy promotional videos. 600$ seems very steep for (more or less) only a chord and arpeggio generator. It reminds me of Teenage Engineering products and marketing style.

Just discovered « Oblique Strategies », by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt. This set of cards is a tool to help artists and musicians through their creative process. (intro post) Alright, I guess I’m going to introduce myself properly. I’m David, a 43 years old guy living in Cherbourg, France. Father of two girls aged 11 and 13. I’ve been working as a broadcast sound engineer at Radio France for almost 20 years now. I’m a musician, have had several bands in the past, but I'm making music on my own at the moment. I’m also into photography, I like to combine it with hiking in the great outdoors. Sometimes get frustrated living so far from the mountains. And I love surfing and riding bikes. How I managed to use the « Nostalgic Neg » profile on my Fuji X-T4 files

I think maybe it will help some fellow fujifilm photographers. And I wanted to test a long form post in public.me. Ok, this is what I did. Just remember I’m not a computer guy, it was a bit of a lucky guess. First, find the « Nostalgic Neg » .xmp profile file for the X-T5. On macOS right click on the Lightroom Classic app and select «show package content » Then go to Contents—>Resources—>Settings—>Adobe—>Profiles—>Camera—>Fujifilm—>Fujifilm X-T5 Copy this file elsewhere, and open the copy in a text editor (I used Brackets). Replace the line crs:CameraModelRestriction="Fujifilm X-T5" by crs:CameraModelRestriction="" Also, change the name of the profile on line Camera NOSTALGIC Neg. Replace it by Camera NOSTALGIC Neg 2 for example. Then save the file, make sure the extension remains « .xmp ». Finally import the profile in Lightroom via the file menu, and it should work. #photography #fujifilm
